Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army handgun is a single action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six rounds. It was designed for the US government service revolver trials of 1873 by Colt’s Manufacturing Company and adopted as the standard military service revolver until 1892. Although the SAA has been offered in over 30 different calibers and various barrel lengths, its overall appearance has remained consistent since 1873. Colt has discontinued its production twice, but brought it back due to excessive demand. This is a 3rd Generation Colt Single Action Army made in 1977. It has been sent to Peacemaker Specialists where it has been significantly modified with a rust blue finish, case-colored frame, action job, trigger job, new grip, cylinder re-chambered for .45 Colt, 11 degree forcing cone, beveled heel and toe on the grip and the revolver was test-fired and the sights adjusted. The revolver is in about Excellent condition with 98% of its new finish remaining. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. All of the Colt SAA revolvers are collectable: 1st, 2nd or 3rd Generation, just to different degrees. This example has been customized by some of the best in the business and is a beautiful piece to behold. Please see our photos and good luck!

Our Assessment: In addition to being an icon of the American West, the Colt Single Action Army has served as the canvas for some of the most gorgeous examples of engraving. The revolver’s graceful lines, mixture of flat and rounded surfaces, and the ability to pair and contrast various metal finishes and grip materials make it an ideal piece for this art form. This .44 Special 1978 vintage Single Action Army was engraved in the “Sears” style by Gary Merlie in 1985. His work is quite beautiful, with the design taking cues from the engraving styles seen on some of the earliest SAAs in the late 19th century. The revolver comes in a Colt presentation case and will make a fine addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
